Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
New research suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
