Senate Approves Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will require the publication of case documents associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team changed course after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Next Steps

This legislation next will be sent to Donald Trump for his signature. The president signaled on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Even though Trump has for months rejected the outcry over the official management of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and announced he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were present in a public section, cheered after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would make public identifying details of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
