No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
